An sl(2, R) current algebra from AdS_3 gravity

    Get PDF
We provide a set of chiral boundary conditions for three-dimensional gravity that allow for asymptotic symmetries identical to those of two-dimensional induced gravity in light-cone gauge considered by Polyakov. These are the most general boundary conditions consistent with the boundary terms introduced by Compere, Song and Strominger recently. We show that the asymptotic symmetry algebra of our boundary conditions is an sl(2,R) current algebra with level given by c/6. The fully non-linear solution in Fefferman--Graham coordinates is also provided along with its charges.Comment: 8 page

Flow cytometric characterization and clinical outcome of CD4+ T-cell lymphoma in dogs: 67 cases.

BackgroundCanine T-cell lymphoma (TCL) is conventionally considered an aggressive disease, but some forms are histologically and clinically indolent. CD4 TCL is reported to be the most common subtype of TCL. We assessed flow cytometric characteristics, histologic features when available, and clinical outcomes of CD4+ TCL to determine if flow cytometry can be used to subclassify this group of lymphomas.ObjectiveTo test the hypothesis that canine CD4+ T-cell lymphoma (TCL) is a homogeneous group of lymphomas with an aggressive clinical course.AnimalsSixty-seven dogs diagnosed with CD4+ TCL by flow cytometry and treated at 1 of 3 oncology referral clinics.MethodsRetrospective multivariable analysis of outcome in canine CD4+ TCL including patient characteristics, treatment, and flow cytometric features.ResultsThe majority of CD4+ TCL were CD45+, expressed low class II MHC, and exhibited an aggressive clinical course independent of treatment regimen (median survival, 159 days). Histologically, CD4+ TCL were classified as lymphoblastic or peripheral T cell. Size of the neoplastic lymphocytes had a modest effect on both PFI and survival in this group. A small number of CD4+ TCL were CD45- and class II MHC high, and exhibited an apparently more indolent clinical course (median survival not yet reached). Conclusions and clinical importanceAlthough the majority of CD4+ TCL in dogs had uniform clinical and flow cytometric features and an aggressive clinical course, a subset had a unique immunophenotype that predicts significantly longer survival. This finding strengthens the utility of flow cytometry to aid in the stratification of canine lymphoma

Private Profits and Public Health: Does Advertising Smoking Cessation Products Encourage Smokers to Quit?

To shed new light on the role private profit incentives play in promoting public health, in this paper we conduct an empirical study of the impact of pharmaceutical industry advertising on smoking cessation decisions. We link survey data on individual smokers with an archive of magazine advertisements. The rich survey data allow us to measure smokers' exposure to smoking cessation advertisements based on their magazine-reading habits. Because we observe the same information about the consumers that the advertisers observe, we can control for the potential endogeneity of advertising due to firms' targeting decisions. We find that when smokers are exposed to more advertising, they are more likely to attempt to quit and are more likely to have successfully quit. While some of the increased quitting behavior involves purchases of smoking cessation products, our results indicate that advertisements for smoking cessation products also increase the probability of quitting without the use of any product. Thus, the public health returns to smoking cessation product advertisements exceed the private returns to the manufacturers. Because advertising of a wide range of consumer products may have important and under-studied spillover effects on various non-market behaviors, our results have broad implications for the economics of advertising.

Experimental aerodynamic heating to simulated shuttle tiles

The heat transfer to simulated shuttle thermal protection system tiles was investigated experimentally using a highly instrumented metallic thin wall tile arranged with other metal tiles in a staggered tile array. Cold-wall heating rate data for laminar and turbulent flow were obtained in the Langley 8-foot high temperature tunnel at a nominal Mach number of 7, a nominal total temperature of 3300 R, free-stream unit Reynolds number from 3.4 x 10 to the 5th power to 2.2 x 10 to the 6th power per foot, and free-stream dynamic pressure of 1.8 psia to 9.1 psia. Experimental data are presented to illustrate the effects of flow angularity and gap width on both local peak heating and overall heating loads

The Irish Republican Army: An Examination of Imperialism, Terror, and Just War Theory

    Get PDF
Analysis of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and their actions in the 1970s and 1980s offer insight into their use of just war theory in their conflict with the British government and ultra-loyalist Protestant forces in Northern Ireland. The historiography of Irish history is defined by its phases of nationalism, revisionism, and anti-revisionism that cloud the historical narrative of imperialism and insurgency in the North. Applying just war theory to this history offers a more nuanced understanding of the conflict of the Troubles and the I.R.A.’s usage of this framework in their ideology that guided their terrorism in the latter half of the twentieth century. The murders of influential members of British society and the I.R.A.’s statements on these events further posit just war theory as a guiding force of this group. In 1980-1981 the I.R.A. staged hunger strikes in the H Block of Long Kesh Prison and the writings of their leader Bobby Sands continued their use of just war theory in their efforts to be granted Special Category Status. This work concludes that the I.R.A. utilized just war theory throughout this period and that it was a guiding force of their ideology. It contributes a more nuanced analysis of just war theory and its applications to the I.R.A.’s struggles against the British. Ultimately, it demonstrates how this theory was used by this insurgent movement to claim legitimacy, defend their actions, and frame their anti-imperialist movement as a necessary means to combatting British forces
